17U AND 19U Competitive NCL Teams
NEW - Tryouts
Each season brings about change as tryouts are introduced for all 17U and 19U athletes wishing to play in our competitive programs. Tryouts are new to Surrey Water Polo and reflect our club's growth and commitment to providing quality training and development for our players.
Returning and new players must attend tryouts at the beginning of September as per the NCL practice schedule. Mid-September, athletes will be selected to join their age group for the National Championship League's (NCL) 17U and 19U traveling teams. Those athletes not making the team will be invited to join the NCL Prep Training for their respective age group where they will train and develop in preparation for tryouts next season or for this season, should a spot become vacant.
Selection will be based on, but not exclusive of:
- general fitness
- awareness of game rules
- team play ability
- tactical adaptability
- water polo technical skills
- sprint swim speed
- distance swim speed
- passing accuracy
- shooting accuracy and power
- ball handling
Making selections at the beginning of the season will allow athletes to plan for tournaments and ensure adequate play time for athletes as the travel team will consist of 12 athletes for each age group (unless circumstances require extra athletes to attend an event). EXCEPTION: The Canada Cup (a 19U crossover event) where coaches can select athletes and invite participation from 19U NCL, 19UNCL prep, and 17U NCL programs.
Interested 17U and 19U athletes are required to register their interest online through PowerUp Sports. A meeting will be held mid-August with all interested participants. Continuance on to September tryouts will require a Deposit/Tryout fee (a team registration fee and non-refundable tryout fee) payable by the third week of August. The tryout fee will only be credited if the athlete registers for practices for the season. No late payments will be accepted as team registration is due by Water Polo Canada's deadline.
At the conclusion of the team tryouts, those athletes not making the team will receive a refund. Those athletes making the team will not receive a refund and their deposit (required for NCL team registration) will be held and is non-refundable. The tryout fee will be credited to the athlete's registration for practices for the season. There is no prorating available for either option.
